I have been trying to communicate this to SOOO many people who don't know about dance and who are susceptible to the manipulations of TV producers....but Supreme Soul is NOT cocky. It was a sentiment that MTV manipulated into the show, and I've heard SO many people that have bought into it. I felt that SS was unjustly labeled as the "cocky guys", and that probably contributed to their early demise from ABDC2.
I actually found this on Supreme Soul [Sector]'s Wiki, and it describes the situation very accurately. I couldn't put it in better words, so I'm gonna just copy/paste. Here's the reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supreme_Soul
---------------------------
Supreme Soul, affiliates of Soul Sector crew, was introduced by MTV
and portrayed by MTV producers as the "cocky" crew to create
controversy on the show by fabricating a story which took a battle out
of context to create Supreme Soul as the "cocky crew" that beat the
Season 1 victors, the Jabbawockeez. The battle which was refered to was
between Jabbawockeez and Supreme Soul's affiliate units, the SoCal
Allstars and Soul Sector, respectively. Although different Soul Sector
members have battled different members of SoCal Allstars and
Jabbawockeez in the past, when inquired about the result of the battle
by Shane Sparks, a judge on ABDC, Bionic a Supreme Soul-Sector member
also a former co-member with Rainen, from Jabbawockeez in another crew,
wanted to fairly say that both crews battled well, but they were
further pushed by Shane Sparks for a straight answer by the judges when
Pharcyde, also member of Supreme Soul-Sector,sarcastically remarked
that they won in order to protect the crews reputation since it was an
audition show and Shane was attempting to make them look bad. Different
Soul Sector members were actually present and Bionic was the only one
that was present at that battle from Supreme Soul, very few members of
the Jabbawockeez were also involved along with Ronnie, a Super Crew
member from ABDC season 2.
In an interview with Ben Chung, from the Jabbawockeez, by Hawaii's
power 104.3 , he remarked about the situation and stated "it wasn't a
completely legit statement, partially true and partially not , thats
'reality tv' and thats what they [MTV] do. Big ups to Supreme Soul you
are all doing your thing, big ups to you guys, much respect,
Jabbawockeez crew we respect ya'll. keep doing your thing man." The
interviewer tried to push more controversy by responding, "so they
kinda exaggerated the whole thing, they kinda took an inch and turned
it into a yard", in which Ben replies "well you know...we all know how
'reality tv'is man. The producers tell them to kinda say something, so
we're not hating on that man, its all good, it's all love its hip hop."
The push for the storyline was created by MTV and pushed on Supreme
Soul to create drama and entertainment, a trademark of MTV "reality
tv". Unfortunately many people viewing did not understand how MTV
producers, editors and writers of the show handled the dance crews to
portray what viewers think is "real". All crews are prepped and each
crew is provided an image and encouraged to say things to create story
lines for each crew. The story lines create drama as well as steer the
mind of viewers.
Members of Supreme Soul Sector and Jabbawockeez continue to have
much respect for each other as dancers despite what MTV told Supreme
Soul members to do because of their understanding behind the screen of
MTV and mutual respect for what each other has done for hip hop.
Unfortunately many unknowing fans, who do not understand the
relationship of these different crews as well as the history and dance
culture, continue to believed in the propaganda of "reality tv" stirred
and created by MTV and have continued to spread rumors and gossip
through out the internet about Supreme Soul as a result. Many of those
spreading rumors are those who do not understand hip hop dance culture
and have only been introduced to hip hop culture and dance through MTV
and ABDC. Even Jabbawockeez member Rainen has tried to clear things up
for fans in order to stop fans misunderstanding on youtube by replying
"its not jabbawockeez vs suprem soul..Its so-cal all stars which is a
mix of bboys and freestylers. some from jabbawockeez, full force, and
cultures shock la...the other was the orignal soul sector. The only one
who was in the battle that is a part of surpeme souls was bionic
man...this battle was a showcase battle..No beef was involved..peace
and blessings. RAINEN" Sadly for many fans, Supreme Soul was the victim
of misguided direction from MTV producers, editors, and writers which
lead to their premature elimination on the show.
alright so i'll be man enough to admit that i love Michelle Branch music. i was kinda disappointed that she had gone country-folk as part of The Wreckers. but today, i found out that on April 10th, 2008, mbranch announced that she's gonna release her 4th solo album in the summer of 2008! that's in the next few months!! the title of her album will be entitled "Everything Comes and Goes." very excited for the album, and you can be sure to find me at her next concert in SF =)
Nice. Jabba won! Happy for those guys. I gotta get me a Jabba tee. Anybody notice how Mouse from Enigma kept flaunting his Jabbawockeez shirt and the mask? He kept getting in the background of the cameras during the interviews of SQ and JW. Funny guy.
I was pretty nervous for a while. All the voting paid off =)
I'm currently obsessed with Leona Lewis. Especially this song..."Bleeding Love". I have a thing for female artists that sing with raw emotion....e.g. Keyshia Cole, Marie Digby, MIchelle Branch.
If you've been watching America's Best Dance Crew, you know that a severe injustice was served last week when Status Quo received the most votes and was safe from elimination. America was robbed of a perfect Jabbawockeez vs. Kaba Modern finale. Going into the finale, Jabbawockeez better win, cuz SQ shoulda been eliminated like 3 or 4 weeks ago. Do your part! Vote for Jabba!!
Vote as many times as you can. Don't have the attitude of "Oh, Jabba's gonna win for sure cuz they're so much better...so I don't need to vote...they got this in the bag." That's probably EXACTLY how SQ got the most votes last week. People thought that Kaba and Jabba were safe cuz they're so much better than SQ...so they didn't vote. And wuddya know...SQ ended up with the most votes. So don't let that happen again. Vote! We have till Thursday to do so, so vote as many times as you can. I've probably voted 200+ times already.
**case in point** My co-worker and I were just talking about this show, and I told him he should vote. These are his exact words: "I don't need to vote. Jabbawockeez are definitely going to win." That's the exact type of thinking that's gonna result in $100k going to Status Quo. I promptly told him that that's what happened to Kaba Modern and that's why America was robbed of a perfect ABDC finale. He is going to vote now.
Yesterday, I purchased tickets to go see Alicia Keys, with Ne-Yo as her opener. Quite a lineup if you ask me. That got me thinking...what other concerts have I gone to? Here's a list of all the ones I've been to, in (approximate) chronological order, with a brief description. I will then rank the top 3 and bottom 3 =) And 5 concerts that I would like to see.
1. Andy Lau (Atlantic City, NJ) - first concert ever...i think i was in middle school. just accompanied my parents; we sat in the first row! i actually knew some of the songs!
2. Lauryn Hill (Philly) - Miseducation Tour. unbelievable. i sat in the last row, but it was in-friggin-credible. i was crazy about lauryn that year. listened to her CD constantly.
3. Janet Jackson w/112 (Chicago) - i was in love with janet. went with cbyun, and it was a lot of fun. janet knows how to entertain.
4. Matt Redman (Evanston, IL) - went to a church service at northwestern, and Matt Redman was there to perform. pretty sweet.
5. Ben Folds (Northwestern) - i only knew a couple of his songs, but it was surprisingly good. i downloaded a couple albums after the concert.
6. Crystal Method (Northwestern) saw them at northwestern's dillo day. i was not high during the light show, so i don't think i got the full effect.
7. Justin Timberlake (Detroit) - I'm Lovin' It McDonalds Tour. was in detroit. small venue. justin pretty much just sang a couple songs. no dancing or anything. the beatboxing was cool. about a 40 minute half-assed show. you know what list this is going under later on...
8. Usher w/Kanye and John Legend (Detroit) - what. a. lineup. this was before john legend got big. we knew he was gonna be good.
9. Deathcab for Cutie (SF) - never heard one of their songs before going to the concert. went because a co-worker asked me. very mellow. not mah stahl.
10. Guns N' Roses w/Skid Row (SF) - bought these tickets right away once i heard about it without any regard to price. how can you pass up an opportunity to see AXL ROSE??? too bad slash/duff and the gang weren't there.
11. Lauryn Hill (SF) - at ruby skye, which is a tiny venue. i was 10 feet away from miss lauryn hill. we made eye contact. my buddy karen was in town during this. she postponed her flight home so that she could go to the concert. sound was kinda overly loud, and it affected my hearing the next day. i actually couldn't hear what was being said during meetings at work.
12. Mariah Carey w/Busta Rhymes (Oakland) - fans weren't really feelin' busta, and he got pissy cuz of that. haha. understandable though...he's a hip hop cornerstone (kind of). mariah was great. voice was amazing, and she was looking pretty good.
13. Christina Aguilera w/Danity Kane and Pussycat Dolls (San Jose) - EYE CANDY for 3 hours. danity kane was okay...not great. and aubrey had gained a heckuva lotta weight. pussycat dolls were surprisingly good...even the vocals! miss christina, though, was awesome, and looking foine, if i may add. her voice is so good.
14. Sara Bareilles (opened for Aqualung) (SF) - this was before she was as big as she is now. first time i had heard many of her songs. i fell in love with her that night. she's soooo good live. and cute personality too.
15. Lauryn Hill (Oakland) - the infamous concert where she seemed like she was high the whole time. left early. her voice was super-scratchy and the acoustics were crap. major disappointment. but i still love her.
16. Sara Bareilles (SF) - her album release party. once again, she is sooo good live. this is before she started getting big radio airplay. i got to talk to her. i said "so how's it feel to finally make it?" and she said "i don't know if i made it yet!" *smile*
17. Keyshia Cole (SF) - wow she's so good. i love her voice. so much emotion.
18. M.I.A. (SF) - didn't know too many songs from her 2nd album, but it was a fun show. one of those "this would be pretty cool if i were high" shows. there were neat psychadelic images/videos in the background.
19. Lupe Fiasco (SF) - lupe is the future of hip hop. he sang sooooo many songs at his concert. dude can actually sing too. he prefaced each song with a story, which was a neat concept cuz it made us try to guess what the next song was based on the story he was telling
Top Three Concerts (this is hard) 3. Sara B. or GNR or Keyshia....too hard to decide 2. Lupe Fiasco 1. Lauryn Hill - Miseducation Tour.
Bottom Three Concerts 3. Justin Timberlake 2. Deathcab for Cutie 1. Lauryn Hill - the oakland one.
Top Three Concerts I'd Like to See 5. Boyz II Men 4. Michelle Branch (pre-country) 3. Fugees Reunion 2. Aaliyah 1. Michael Jackson (in his hey-day)
